God’s special treasure

In my home, I have a few memorabilia I am extremely careful with. Real treasures, not necessarily for their pecuniary value, but maybe just because of memories. In my case, these are some memories of my father Daniel, some things I picked up in Egypt, and some parts of my stamp collection. I treasure them.
You must have some of those treasures at home as well. They are irreplaceable, so you are extra careful with them. And you would be so sad if you lost them. Have you noticed that some of those things that you are so attached to, seem rather meaningless to others? But for you, they are so important.

When God speaks to Moses in Exodus 19:5, and when Peter writes in 1 Peter 2:9 to Christians in present Turkey, we hear that we are God’s ‘special treasure’. That is how the Jewish translator Everett Fox translates the words that in other translation are: ‘peculiar treasure’ (KJV), ‘treasured possession’ (NIV), and so on.

The people of God - you and I - are God’s special treasure.

That is a comforting thought. God, our Father, treasures us. He cares for us. He keeps us safe. He makes sure that He always keeps an eye on you. The apostle Paul expresses it vividly: “Your life is hidden with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3:3)

That God is with you today! Jos Strengholt
